Does Fasting Lead to Preterm Birth?
This belief centers around the idea that a pregnant woman’s fasting may trigger preterm labor, but this is a misconception with no scientific basis. The increase in preterm births during Ramadan each year is not due to fasting itself, but rather to the pregnant woman not drinking enough fluids during iftar and suhoor, especially in hot summer seasons, which may lead to labor pains. Therefore, we always advise drinking large and sufficient amounts of fluids after iftar and during suhoor.
This highlights the role of the doctor and the importance of consulting him or her regarding fasting during Ramadan, especially in the later months of pregnancy, so that the pregnant woman is not exposed to serious complications. There may also be other factors that can lead to preterm birth, which may coincidentally occur in pregnant women.
